Before These Crowded Streets is widely reguarded as DMB's greatest musical achievement by many fans. Selling 420,000 copies in the first week it when straight in at number 1 on the Billboard charts. Just for comparison, UK tabloid newspaper "The Sun" believed Led Zeppelin's latest release, "How The West Was Won", which contained several rare live tracks, was above anything the Rolling Stones or U2 could pull sales-wise because it sold 158,000 copies in its first week.
The album was widely-loved by critics when it surfaced, proving to them that the band could produce some of the most deep and complex music ever written while at the same time being able to blend it with the jazz, folk and rock fusion that DMB are famous for (although limiting the band to being described through just these three categories would be a crime).
"Pantala Naga Pampa", the opening track, was believed to be 'Welcome to our home' in an african language known as "Gambian", but Nancies.org recently discovered that there is in fact no such language, and that the best translation for the title is in Indian, meaning "I have a python in my pants".
1998 was also the scene for DMB's most active and grueling tour, but contains some of the greatest setlists and best music they've ever played. The tour started in April and they played non-stop every month (excluding September) until December 19th, which eventually became the live release, "Live In Chicago". Other Images:
